If you're dead-set on unlocking the character classes with the DLC Character Packs, here's the minimum of what you need to buy. While every character class can be unlocked through normal play, characters bought through the Character Pack DLC are available right from the beginning of the game, and will only be restricted for story reasons. One reason why you might want to buy the various Character Packs is to quickly gain access to every character class in the game.
